EDI in Theatre Advocate & Consultant
equity, diversity, & inclusion in the theatre
Mia is an active proponent of fostering equitable and inclusive environments in each project that she gets to work on, and she’s passionate about bringing these values to the forefront of the artistic process. A background in teaching EDI to young adults, years of educational research on intersectionality and cycles of marginalization and systemic oppression, and a lifetime of growing up as a chicanx woman in rural Minnesota have prepared Mia to weave her understanding into her work in the theatre. She’s also trained in conflict management and proactive promotion of conflict competency from the Minnesota State Department of Human Services, enabling her to aid in facilitating complex, meaningfully challenging conversations and to foster an open, inclusive artistic environment.
Mia had the incredible opportunity to implement and develop the position of Inclusion and Advocacy Officer on the Stage 2 Theatre Company board in the spring of 2021, spearheading the company’s efforts to become a more accessible, inclusive, equitable organization.
Establishing a space in which artists feel celebrated and supported is paramount to the creative process. Representation matters. Healthy and safe working relationships matter. Whether you are simply curious to learn about the principals of EDI, or are eager to more closely examine how they operate within your own theatrical workspaces, Mia would be thrilled to collaborate with you.
